decongestive therapy

A Proven Therapy for Swelling, Pain and Recovery

While many forms of therapy focus on relieving pain, restoring movement or promoting relaxation, Decongestive Therapy, more accurately known as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), is a specialised clinical treatment designed to support the body's lymphatic system and improve the management of swelling, inflammation and lymphatic dysfunction. Performed by appropriately trained practitioners, Decongestive Therapy is an integral component of Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy (DLT), an internationally recognised approach used to manage lymphoedema and many other conditions involving fluid retention and impaired lymphatic function.

What Is Decongestive Therapy?

The lymphatic system is a vital part of the body's immune and fluid management systems. It helps remove excess fluid, waste products and cellular debris from tissues while supporting immune function. When this system becomes compromised—through surgery, cancer treatment, injury, chronic illness or other medical conditions—fluid can accumulate within the tissues, resulting in swelling, discomfort and reduced mobility. Decongestive therapy uses precise, gentle and rhythmical techniques that encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid through functioning lymphatic pathways. Unlike deep tissue massage, it is performed with very light pressure because the lymphatic vessels lie just beneath the skin.

Who Can Benefit?

Decongestive therapy is widely recognised as an effective treatment component for people living with lymphatic disorders and a range of swelling-related conditions. Treatment may be beneficial for individuals experiencing:

  • Primary or secondary lymphoedema
  • Cancer-related lymphoedema following surgery or radiation therapy
  • Lipoedema and lipo-lymphoedema
  • Chronic venous disease
  • Persistent swelling following orthopaedic surgery
  • Recovery after cosmetic procedures such as liposuction or body contouring surgery
  • Swelling associated with pregnancy, obesity or prolonged immobility
  • Certain chronic inflammatory conditions where lymphatic dysfunction contributes to symptoms

Every patient should first receive an appropriate clinical assessment to determine whether decongestive massage is suitable for their condition.
